Obasan Opinions (Poor Megumi)

Near our house, there is a shotengai, a kind of traditional shopping street with butchers, bakers, hairdressers', fishmongers etc etc. Megumi likes these shops, and when she was pregnant, she preferred to shop at the shotengai rather than the supermarket. So, she often got chatting to the people (often middle-aged women, or obasan), who run the various shops.

In the past few days, she has gone back to a few of the shops to buy food for dinenr, and taken Rosie with her. ALL of the local obasan have, without exception, said 'she looks just like her Dad'. I think it is just the shape of Rosie's eyes and her pale skin, but to middle-aged Japanese eyes, she does look 'Western'.

I feela bit sorry for poor Megumi - she spent 9 months carrying our daughter, and now spends all day taking care of her. Yet when she goes outside, people just remark on how much she looks like her father.

Anyone out there think that they see a lot of Megumi in Rosie's features?

Remember it is always easier to spot the differences, i.e. the foreign features. I'm not surprised really.

exactly what Dirk said. When my daugher was born everyone in Japan said the same thing, but when we show photos to family in Canada they remark on how much she looks like her mother... Rosie's facial features will change and she may even end up not looking like either of you!

It's just the same everywhere...the look of babies changes often within weeks, when they grow a little bit. So you can get new opinions every week, just wait. My mother has 12 siblings, and every two weeks, we would have been able to make a new poll, how my daughter looks like, and I guess we would have got every week new results...

In my opinoin Rosie has a lot of Megumi's features (more than yours, sorry Gary), but you can clearly see, too, that her father is not Japanese.

Hard to be sure since she's so young, but I do believe she inherited your nose, and a very attractive one it is too.

She's a cutie!

She is far too cute to look like her dad. Her good looks could have only come from Megumi.

forgive me gary, but all babies look the same to me. maybe the resemblance to pop is just rosies' chubby cheeks??

Actually, babies in their first year of life tend to look more like their fathers, that's Mother Nature's little trick so that fathers will "see theirselves" in their children and become more affectionate and caring... I know it sounds strange, but it came out in one of our Genetics lessons at University. Anyway, Rosie is just so pretty, and I'm sure you don't need tricks to love her and be a caring daddy...

gary and megumi,

according to amy, folks will say he looks like the father for reassurance. coz obviously theres no doubt who mam is but dad.....well you can never be 100% and this is why people say doesnt she look like her father???

Inevitable.. Some people still refer to me as "not looking Japanese at all" to "looking 100% Japanese". My younger brother came out almost blond and now his hair is as dark as the night. Also his nose went from cute and tiny to big, so you'll never know how it ends with us "hafus". One thing is for sure though, we will always get the same comments. My half-korean friend sent me this site http://www.hapaclub.org/
Oh, and to be diplomatic and honest, I think Rosie looks like a fusion of you both.
