Megumi took young Ms Garner to a photo shoot for a 'mother and baby' magazine last week. She was not too impressed with the lights and the camera, and bawled her eyes out the whole time!
She got a call from a different magazine today, asking us to sign an 'exclusive' contract with them.
I have slight reservations about all this, I have to admit. The first one is that I'm not really sure if I want my daughter being used as a tool to sell clothing or whatever. Especially as these things don't usually allow you to refuse to promote specific companies. (I read 'No Logo', so am a little sensitive about this, I suppose).
The second concern I have is that I don't want Angelie to become a narcissist. I want her to be a nice, kind, friendly little girl, not one who thinks she is some sort of star...
So, as I said, I have slight reservations. On the other hand, maybe I am thinking too deeply about this. Anyway, she may cry again and not get her picture in the magazine again!
Posted by Gary at February 28, 2006 03:36 PMParents like to think that their offspring is the cutest, most intelligent etc. of all. Being offered a photo contract is something very flattering - perhaps every mother's dream -, but has little meaning or value overall. It is a commercial enterprise no matter what way you look at it.
Unless you need the rewards (money or flattery), I would abstain for various reasons. Of course that's a very personal decision.
Posted by: Dirk at February 28, 2006 10:10 PMDon't sign exclusive - or if you do only sign for a certain period (one month) or combined use and period (baby magazine covers one year). Otherwise she's cute and a cover will be a souvenir for the future. If you're signing up for a kids model agency or something more long term then your concerns may be more valid.
